Who Are We

Alawda is an Arabic word that means ‘returning’ or ‘coming back’. But it also means ‘welcome’. The Alawda Community Centre was established about 32 years ago and was launched by the Chief Commissioner of Victoria, Dr William Wells, and the former Mayor of Brunswick, Ms Elizabeth Jackson, on 25 September 1990 at 6.15pm.

Many other officials and guests also attended the opening.

Mr Graeme Walker, a former Councillor and Mayor of the City of Brunswick, spoke of how a group of volunteers took over a neglected Scout Hall, which had not been used since 1985.

Mr Walker also said that is was great to see the local people, both newcomers to Australia and the older Brunswick residents, working together to help the youth of Brunswick, which is now part of the City of Moreland.
